포루투갈의 항해자. B. 디아스의 희망봉 발견 후로 숙원이던 인도 항로 개척의 원정대장이 되었다.

1497년 7월 4척의 선대(船隊)를 인솔하고 리스본을 출범하였다. 도중까지 동행한 디아스의 조언대로, 시에라리온 앞바다에서 대서양을 서쪽으로 크게 우회하는 혁명적 항법(航法)을 써서(약 6,400km), 11월 희망봉을 돌아 대륙 동해안을 북상하여 모잠비크 ·몸바사를 통과, 1498년 4월 마린디에 도착했다.
